Science

Our aim is to provide continuity with a student’s home school and support students with their learning and understanding of Science.

Science is taught at Ancora House School as part of a personalised learning programme that is developed for students to build their self-confidence whilst at the same time supporting their learning. Whenever possible the subject is delivered as specified by the secondary curriculum being offered in individual’s home schools.

Students are taught across Key Stages 3, 4,and 5 using a wide range of materials and resources; this can be through a variety of means from practical hands-on investigation in the classroom, to the use of a wide range of text books and the interactive Boardworks programs. Where appropriate practical science is encouraged to develop the skills needed to work scientifically. Teaching may sometimes take place on the ward if students are not able to come up to the science classroom.

Specific support is provided for pupils in their GCSE and GCE years with exam practise, where needed, in accordance with exam board syllabuses. Attention is always paid to changes in the curriculum and where there needs to be particular emphasis on specific aspects such as the use of scientific vocabulary and extended writing.
