Post 16

Post-16 education

The government has increased the age to which all young people in England are required to continue in education or training. This does not mean young people have to stay in school. Young people are able to choose from:

  • full-time education (eg at a school or college)
  • an apprenticeship or traineeship
  • part-time education or training combined with one of the following:
    • employment or self-employment for 20 hours or more a week
    • volunteering for 20 hours or more a week.

Young people admitted to Ancora House are between the ages of 13 years and 18 years old. The Post 16 group  is mainly comprised of A level students, college students and those classified as NEET ( Not in Employment, education or training).

A Level study is supported in close collaboration with the home school; students are supported to work independently in thoses subjects other than core or Art.

For students who have not attained a Level 4 in Maths and English we offer GCSE together with Information, Advice and Guidance , PHSCE, Art and Small Animal Care.

Where students are enrolled in college for vocational course, independent work is supported by teaching assistants to help them remain engaged and to continue to make progress.

Following admission many students return to their school or college successfully, a more small number request support to change their course of study; this support is provided by the transition team.
