Art

The Art Department at Ancora House School is central to the work we do with all young people, regardless of whether they are taking Art as an exam subject. Our belief is that creatvity is an integral part of being human, and that consequently, all of us have the capacity to succeed in the arena of Arts and Crafts.

The majority of young people begin their educational journey in the Art room, for an initial assessment period, and where they are also introduced to a variety of gentle kinaesthetic activities(such as simple jewellery making and mindful colouring) which are designed to serve as a helpful and positive distractions well as providing opportunity for young people to develop new skills and gain confidence in their new surroundings.

During their stay, young people are encouraged to engage further in Art, in more challenging mixed media projects spread over a number of sessions. Thes may be in small groups or 1:1. Our philosophy is very much one of ‘can do’, striving to make the subject as accessible as possible, without compromising on the quality of work produced. We frequently find students commenting that prior to coming to Ancora House School they ‘didn’t think they were any good at Art’.

Students are encouraged to develop their own ideas for Artwork, but the display of work by past students visible in the Art room and on the walls of the school, aswell as on Pinterest, also provides inspiration for them. ( Examples of our students’ work can be seen on our Ancora House School page on Pinterest).

Students taking Art as an exam subject find the department amply well equipped to facilitate their on-going projects with an excellent range of media for all disciplines within the Art and Design family, including sewing machines for textile work.

We also offer the ASDAN Activity Award through the Art department, and this has served as a springboard into FE courses in Art, Design and Textiles for some young people who had previously not studied art as an exam subject.
